Scale 3 - Dramaturgy/Stage Design

For scale change 3 I designed a dramaturgic environment for my ballerina to move through.

I wanted to convey ideas of repression, entrapment, loss/separation, and a search for identity. The character was to be the epitome of the Gothic female - shy, chaste, humble, quiet, calm - in effect, a Goddess. However, imagery and music strip her of this superficial facade, because she is much more than her patriarchal society allows her to be. Her mind runs free with imagination, and all her worldly fears are represented in her Gothic world by symbols and markers so that she can take control and become the author of her story.

Varying degrees of transparency and opacity both deny her, and set her free, and these are achieved by panels which unfurl to enmesh the stage. Careful lighting and music help the set convey the character's distress.
